Embarking on a journey of exploration and professional development, the ISTernship Summer Program offers an invaluable opportunity for bachelor's and master's students to expand their scientific research experience.

With a focus on various disciplines such as biology, computer science, data science, mathematics, physics, neuroscience, chemistry, materials, and interdisciplinary areas, this program invites students from across the globe to immerse themselves in cutting-edge research at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA).

In this article, we will delve into the details of the program, including eligibility requirements, application process, program duration, financial support, and the enriching experiences awaiting participants.

ISTernship Program Overview

The ISTernship Program, an amalgamation of "IST-" and "(int)ernship," serves as a summer internship program designed for bachelor's and master's students seeking to enhance their research capabilities.

Since its inception in 2013, the program has welcomed selected applicants each summer, providing them with the opportunity to collaborate closely with esteemed faculty members or lab mentors on short-term research projects.

Eligibility

The program welcomes applications from students worldwide. Applicants must be enrolled in Bachelor's or Master of Science programs (or similar) at accredited degree-granting institutions.

To be eligible, applicants must have completed at least the fourth semester of their bachelor's studies before the program start date.

Additionally, individuals who have obtained a bachelor's or master's degree within a year from the program start date are also eligible to apply. Please note that students accepted or enrolled in a PhD program are not eligible to apply.

Program Duration and Application Process:

The ISTernship Program spans a duration of 2 to 3 months, taking place between May 15 and September 15. The exact dates and length of the program are determined in collaboration with the assigned supervisor.

The application process for the ISTernship Program 2024 Intake is now open through the designated application portal. Interested students are encouraged to submit their applications along with the required documents, including their CV/resume, statement of purpose, university transcripts and diplomas, and contact information of 1 or 2 referees.

It is important to note that the application deadline is February 15, 2024, at 15:00 CET. Reference letters must also be submitted by the same deadline to be considered.

Financial Support and Benefits

Successful applicants of the ISTernship Program receive substantial support to facilitate their participation.

This includes assistance with travel and visa arrangements if required. Each candidate is provided with a monthly compensation to aid with the cost of living in Austria, as well as travel expenses to and from the country.

The program is developed in collaboration with OeAD, the Austrian Agency for International Cooperation in Education and Research, which handles scholarship payments for a period of up to 3 months throughout the program duration.

Housing and Health Insurance

ISTerns have access to subsidized accommodation options on campus, including apartments owned and operated by ISTA, or student residences operated by OeAD in Vienna.

These accommodations provide an opportunity to connect with the student community beyond the laboratory and classroom settings.

Additionally, Austria's statutory social security system ensures that ISTerns have access to health insurance from the start of their ISTernship program at ISTA, ensuring their well-being and peace of mind.

ISTernship Community and Enriching Experiences:

The ISTernship Program fosters a vibrant community, offering a range of events designed to maximize the value of participants' time at ISTA.

These events include presentations by relevant professors or their Postdocs, providing an overview of the research conducted in various groups at ISTA. ISTerns also receive invitations to annual ISTA events held during the summer, offering further opportunities for networking and learning.

The program culminates in an annual poster session, where ISTerns present their research projects to peers, faculty members, and lab mentors, showcasing their accomplishments and discoveries.

The ISTernship Summer Program at ISTA opens doors to a transformative experience in scientific research and professional development.

Through engaging in cutting-edge projects, collaborating with renowned faculty members, and immersing themselves in a dynamic and supportive community, participating students gain invaluable skills and knowledge that propel their academic and career pursuits.

By embracing this opportunity, students embark on a journey of exploration and growth, making lasting connections and contributing to the advancement of scientific knowledge.
